Get a Taste of Charlotte’s History

Ride along Charlotte’s historic neighborhoods and get a delicious taste of life in the Queen City.

Charlotte’s first suburban neighborhoods were formed along electric streetcar service lines that began operating out of Uptown in 1891. Dilworth was the very first such neighborhood, named after its developer, Edward Dilworth Latta. This area is on the National Historic Register and spans residential architecture from the more humble restored craftsman bungalows to ornate brick dwellings along curvy canopied streets. Dilworth’s layout was designed by the Olmstead Brothers, the country’s premier landscape designers (who also designed Biltmore Gardens, Manhattan’s Central Park, and Washington DC).

While Dilworth’s is arguably Charlotte’s most desirable residential area, it also boasts dozens of highly regarded boutiques and gift shops. There are local treats such as burgers, tacos, doughnuts, hot dogs, and fine wine around every corner!

Cleverly named because it begins immediately at the southern end of our Center City, Southend has captured the hearts of many Charlotteans who can’t get enough of this revitalized stretch that runs parallel to Dilworth. Known mostly for its one-of-a-kind Southern food spots, parks, galleries, and breweries, there’s been explosive growth along the light rail line, and the numerous redesigned industrial buildings continue to deepen the aesthetic intrigue. Slightly sophisticated, but never stuffy, this is the place to explore to enjoy a mix of the best access to urban living and intimate outdoor spaces with friends.
